Anti aging serums – as well as or instead of moisturiser?

I tried an anti aging serum (E Lauder) recently which left my skin very smooth but apparently it needs to be used under moisturiser. Is this really necessary and if so, why? Seems a bit like overkil!

I use anti aging serum at night, and moisturizer during the day. I don’t know if that’s what is recommended, but it works for me!
