What is so attractive about having a tan?

Please don’t say that it “looks hot”, because I want to know what it is that makes it hot.
It is so unhealthy and when you are older, it makes your skin wrinkled.
And face lifts are really horrible-looking.

I think it is gross.
Fair skin is sexy as hell, having alligator skin (yes, your tanned skin looks like an alligator) makes a girl look 10 years older then they really are.
if you’re pale like rob on twilight, then a tan is required. if not, then ew, it’s hideous. It makes people look like bright orange kool-aid.
It’s disgusting and it’s cancer causing. I sooo agree with you that women and men who tan at the beach or in tanning salon ( their skin) looks horrid and they look like “SPent” ugly people when they get older..it wrinkles the skin.. it just loooks GROSS!
Tan is ugly on a lot of people, to be honest.
I personally find natural looking skin attractive. If you have a natural olive tone base then a tan is lovely, but if you’re naturally pale, then being pale is very attractive.
Don’t go fake when your body is beautiful the way it is. You’re both right, but you’re the idiot for assuming ‘tan is in’, and that you have to go with that crowd.
Your mom wins that round.
I agree. I prefer pale skin. To me it looks healthier and fresher. Pale doesn’t look sick when you are healthy, because most healthy people will have a pinkish glow to their skin at least on their cheeks, and if not you can wear the tiniest bit of blush. Tanned skin always ends up looking either fake or haggard.
I never understood this either. I’ve always been careful about my pale skin. Even as a kid where tans were a fad, I just couldn’t understand it. They always looked gross to me.
Natural tanned skin, however, can be very beautiful, like certain Latino’s and some Asians with naturally dark skin can have very very pretty skin.
White-skinned people who tan, though. I just didn’t understand.
Natural tan is nice, fake tan is gross..being over tan is also gross.
I don’t know, there’s nothing wrong with being pale or fair…
=D
People just over-do the tan, a light tan is attractive because it’s natural for that to happen & the tan that everyone tries to achieve is not because it looks fake & it’s not natural for people to lay and soak in the sun. A tan is supposed to make you look slimmer & hides flaws (scars, pimples).
i think looking tanned makes you look healthy
and gives you a ‘sun kissed look’ yeaah people go over the top By making them selves look orange But having that nice natural tan is Nice (=
and i dont see how its ‘Unhealthy’ Everyone Ends up with wrinkles? Not a big Deal!
i dont think people should Go to the extreme from hiding from the sun all there lives Because they dont want to get wrinkles or Sun spots !
Everyone has different opinions i guess.

Most people think someone that is tanned is healthier and more attractive. It is something that has changed over time. In the early 1900s women loved the pale look and would be completely covered when out in the sun.
good question, i’ve never used fake tan in my life because i don’t really fancy smelling like a digestive biscuit or having skin cancer by the time i’m 30.
I think it started with Coco Chanel. She came back from a holiday tanned and people thought it looked “healthy” and “fashionable”. Other than that, it can hide flaws and make people look slimmer. Although i have a natural olive complexion i absolutely love pale skin, it is so classic and beautiful.
I have this discussion with my Filipina girlfriend, and we agree to differ.
I have pale skin like a maggot. Some people burn, some people tan, I just reflect. I am envious of my gf who has the most beautiful naturally brown skin, but she grumbles bitterly about how going into the sun for just a couple of hours and she is almost black. She uses skin whitener and looks wistfully at a photograph when her skin was almost as pale as mine.
In Roman times, they used to prize fair-skinned slaves from Northern Europe, because they considered them angels (this is the origin of the word England – land of angels). Here in rainy gloomy England, getting into the sun is a rare chance to get some Vitamin D, and we all feel a lot better for it. Hence a tan is associated with health and well-being and summer.
In places, such as Africa, pale skin is exotic, and possibly a little scary – like walking among ghosts.
In other countries, particularly Latin countries, a tan is associated with a willingness to take your clothes off in public, and is considered hot and sexy. I’m thinking in particular of Brazilians at carnival time, who are very proud of the sexiness of their women. In Islamic countries, the opposite is true, so pale skins are considered a sign of modesty.
Australians value living life to the full, and a tanned body is someone who is not afraid to take part in outside activities and sport, where it is uncomfortable to wear too many clothes. A willingness to give something a go is more important to them than physical appearance.
I agree with you about face lifts.
well people who tan in tanning beds excessively are stupid but i’m actually naturally tan and still wear sunblock because i dont want melanoma. I’m not really sure what makes it “hot” but i’m gonna assume that being somewhat tan can hide skin imperfections, making the skin have a flawless appearance. and not many people know this but some women in island countries who are naturally tan/dark actually avoid sunlight to try and be fair-skinned. hope this helps
Okay, since you asked:
Looking at America, historically, in the old days it was considered desirable and fashionable to be as pale as you could be. This was taken as an indication that you were a person of means who had others to do your grunt work for you. With it, you also had very smooth hands that never worked in the garden. When you went out, you had a parasol or someone to carry another sunshield for you.
Now, having a tan tells the rest of society that you are a person of leisure. Someone who can golf or play tennis at will and never worry about income.
it makes you appear healthier and more active because you are spending time outside. even though we know the risks it has now, the appeal hasn’t faded.
I prefer the ivory pale skin. I myself am naturally tan (i am Asian) and i would kill to be pale..
some people dont need a tan… like me because im cinnamoned colored skin(mexican) but i think that you should stay the way you are because God and your family and friends love you just the way you are….. its also very unhealthy to go to a tanning saloon or booth because it can cause skin cancer
